Preserving the Beauty of Your Emerald Jewelry
Emeralds are prized for their beauty, but they require thoughtful care.
While emeralds are relatively hard, they are not especially tough and can be brittle, particularly because most contain natural inclusions. Sudden impacts, temperature changes, or physical shocks can cause damage and should be avoided.
An estimated 90% of emeralds are treated with oil or resin to enhance clarity, making ultrasonic and steam cleaners unsafe. Clean emerald jewelry gently with a warm, damp, soapy cloth. Do not soak emeralds, and avoid harsh detergents, solvents, or household chemicals, which can remove protective oils.
Keep emeralds away from hot lights, prolonged sun exposure, and other heat sources, as heat can dry out fracture fillings and compromise the stone’s integrity.
